Are you interested in how large software companies develop software? Marty Bland will share experiences from Capital One. We use Kanban, Scrum, and SAFe. He will share details on what it means to be Agile and use these methodologies.
Marty is a native Virginian. He grew up in Haymarket in Northern Virginia. Marty graduated
from James Madison University with a Bachelor of Arts, Management and Management
Information Systems with a minor in Economics. He married his college sweetheart, Susan in
His first job was with the Internal Revenue Service as a business analyst helping develop the
first electronic filing programs. Marty moved to Richmond in 1991 to begin his second job as a
programmer then project manager for Reynolds Metals. He joined Capital One in 1999 as a
Capital One began their agile journey in 2005. Marty transitioned to a Scrum Master and
continued his agile journey until present where he works as an Agile Coach for the Payments
Marty began volunteering in the community in 2005 by mentoring two second graders, Brittany
and Hillary, at Broad Rock Elementary. He continues mentoring those two girls. Marty joined
the Richmond I Have a Dream Found board during this time. He has helped Capital One
support Broad Rock and Greene Elementaries. As the girls moved to middle and high school,
he ensured Capital One supported those schools as well.
While the girls were in middle school, Marty and several Capital One volunteers began
introducing a handful of middle school students to technology developing web pages. This has
turned into the Capital One Coders program which has introduced over 10,000 middle school
students to technology using MIT App Inventors. Marty is also looking to start a Agile for
Learners volunteer program introducing students and teachers to Agile and Scrum principles.
